This series of tutorials are taught in partnership with Wycliffe Bible Translators and SIL International.
Sociolinguistics tutorials are delivered in close succession with Anthropology, so students are able to take one or both modules in the same period of study.
They are aimed at those who have
- taken Assignment Related Training and
- completed a field internship or
- have at least some field experience.
The course or its equivalent is required for those wishing to serve with SIL in a role beyond that of an internship.
You should further expect to:
These tutorials may exceptionally be taken by those who have completed the Assignment Related Training course and wish to continue with a full year of training before going overseas. It will be necessary for such students to engage in research of the area where they expect to work overseas.
The usual entry requirements for a Redcliffe College postgraduate level course apply.
By the end of Sociolinguistics, participants will have:
- Acquired a deeper understanding of sociolinguistics as a discipline, in relation to linguistics, anthropology and language-related domains such as education and translation.
- Studied seminal articles and original texts from key authors.
- Compared and discussed various viewpoints and theoretical approaches.
- Contrasted the literature with the particulars of their field experience in a given assignment.
- Explored further the specific sociolinguistic parameters of their host country, both at the local and national level.
- Worked towards definitions of the concepts of bilingualism, dialect(s), language shift and language death, in relation to vernacular languages.
- Discussed their findings in group tutorials.
- Written essays presenting their own current thinking that interact with the literature and make use of their field experience.
Course dates
Sociolinguistics tutorials form part of the PGDip stage of MA Field Linguistics and MA Literacy Programme Development, which runs from January to June. It can also be studied as a standalone module.
