Anthropology Tutorials

This series of tutorials are taught in partnership with Wycliffe Bible Translators and SIL International. 

Anthropology and Sociolinguistics are delivered in close succession, so students are able to take one or both modules in the same period of study.

They are aimed at those who have

• taken Assignment Related Training and
• completed a field internship or
• have at least some field experience.

The course or its equivalent is required for those wishing to serve with SIL in a role beyond that of internship.

You should further expect to:

• come to these tutorials with notes and observations that you can discuss with their tutors;
• engage in guided reading in the subject areas;
• relate this reading to your experience and produce a brief research paper.

These tutorials may exceptionally be taken by those who have completed the Assignment Related Training course and wish to continue with a full year of training before going overseas. It will be necessary for such students to engage in research of the area where they expect to work overseas.

By the end of Anthropology, participants will have:

• Acquired a deeper understanding of anthropology as a discipline.
• Improved understanding of key concepts within anthropology.
• Explored factors that shape and constitute culture and society (both our own and the cultures in which we work).
• Appreciated how anthropological sensitivity can enhance and facilitate work and life in a different cultural setting.
• Critically engaged with the literature through formative assignments and group discussions by relating it to previous experience in cross-cultural situations.
• Used anthropological literature and concepts to produce a brief working paper/essay (2,000 words) relating both to relevant experience and to the tutorials.

Course dates

Anthropology tutorials form part of the PGDip stage of MA Field Linguistics and MA Literacy Programme Development, which runs from January to June. It can also be studied as a standalone module.
