‘I love how tailored this programme is, allowing students to shape the programme around their particular passions, roles and contexts. We have carefully developed it to be excellent CPD for those whose ministry is communicating God’s Word in complex contexts.’ Dr Tim Davy, leader of the Scripture Engagement specialism
Some questions we wrestle with together on this programme include:
How can we understand the Bible as an instruments of God's mission?
What about cultures where there is apathy, suspicion or even hostility towards the Bible?
How do we bring the Bible into the digital space?
Can Hollywood depictions of biblical stories ever be useful in evangelism?
How do we get the Bible into the hearts and minds of people who cannot, or choose not to, read?
To what extent can people experience Scripture through the creative arts?
What does the 'translatability' of the Christian faith teach us about the Bible and mission?
Scripture Engagement is a study stream of the MA in Contemporary Missiology; so completing this programme will give you an MA in Contemporary Missiology (Scripture Engagement).
The MA in Contemporary Missiology (Scripture Engagement) is validated by the University of Gloucestershire.
The MA in Contemporary Missiology gives you a firm understanding of mission approaches and issues.
Students on all Contemporary Missiology streams study two compulsory modules:
Research Methods and Approaches for Missiological Study (CM1)
explore approaches to the concept of missio Dei (God’s mission in the world) and holistic mission, and gain a thorough orientation on skills for postgraduate missiological research and study.
Global Missiological Issues in Intercultural Contexts (CM2)
focus on a number of crucial issues that demand attention as we participate in God’s mission in the contemporary world.
Students on the Scripture Engagement stream specialise their study by combining the above with two elective modules:
Scripture Engagement: Approaches and Issues (CM9)
explore and evaluate a variety of Scripture Engagement approaches and issues, both in Western contexts and in the majority world.
Scripture Engagement: Professional Project (CM10)
undertake an approved Scripture Engagement project with a guided independent study module, and develop tools for a specific area of professional practice, within your programme.
MA students then complete a research dissertation:
Dissertation (CM3)
the culmination of your learning experience; frame and negotiate a research question (usually related to your field of experience and/or current work) and relating your topic to themes of contextual Scripture Engagement, present your findings with reference to current academic research, and their practical implications for mission today.
